So, you’ve done the work to identify a part in your bill of materials that could be made more effectively with additive manufacturing, but now comes the tough part: figuring out how to make it. With so many additive technologies on the market, how do you pick the right one?

At Fast Radius, we do a detailed assessment to determine the right additive manufacturing tech and materials for our customers. There are lots of factors in that assessment, but here are the top three:

First, your design is key. Multi Jet Fusion, for instance, is great when you want to make durable parts, like this robot joint. And DLS creates parts with a high-quality finish right off the machine.

Material properties also matter a ton. Like, PC-ISO printed on FDM is a great bet for biocompatibility.

Lastly, you can’t forget the bottom line. The cost curve is different for each type of process and materials.

These three factors aren’t the only things you’ll need to evaluate before choosing an additive technology, but they’ll give you a good start.
